Colorectal lesions

Cellvizio | Making sure your Colorectal treatment went well

Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of death from cancer in the United States. However, almost all colorectal cancers can be cured if they are detected early – or even prevented if pre-cancerous polyps are completely removed before they become malignant.

Colonoscopy, the endoscopic examination of the colon and the lower part of the small bowel, is widely regarded as the “gold standard” for detection of abnormalities in the colon. During standard colonoscopy procedures, physicians remove polyps and send them to a pathologist for analysis. However, in some cases, residual pre-cancerous tissue remains around the polyp resection site, potentially opening the door for a recurring cancerous growth.

Reliable follow up assessments

In order to help them remove all suspicious tissue, leading physicians have been using the Cellvizio probe-based Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy (pCLE) system to magnify up to 1,000 times the polyp and its surrounding mucosa, and thereby visualize cellular-level features that help them differentiate normal vs pre-cancerous tissue. With the additional information, the physician can use his/her medical judgment to make sure that all cancer cells have been removed and/or re-treat on the spot if necessary
